I was thinking that it’s been a while since I’ve posted some logos. Here are 3 new ones that we recently completed.

The first is a monogram for financial consultant, Mark Vella Bonanno. It is formed from his initials – MVB.

Gestalt Psychotherapist – Linda Åklundh approached us to create a new identity that would communicate the benefits of her new ‘business coaching’ venture. Our solution was to develop a composition of stick figures – working in harmony towards a shared goal. At the same time, the new symbol suggests the Swedish letter Å.

Of the 3, my personal favourite is a proposed symbol for the European Bully Kennel Club. It is created from 5 kennel symbols arranged in such a way that they also suggest a 5 pointed star. The identity needed to be versatile and legible, as it would also be used in conjunction with other graphic components – at various sizes.

Over the years, our company has been very comfortable with presenting a witty face to the world – from our choice of name to the imagery that people associate with Bulldog.

We developed this visual pun to commemorate our 20th anniversary on February 10th, 2010. The piece fuses a crossword puzzle with our logo to create a playful visual short-hand for what Bulldog has done over the last 20 years.

The starting place for this solution was a concise thank you message from a happy client – the crossword puzzle graphic just seemed to manifest itself. Finding branding related terms to fit in the spaces was rather more challenging.

Bulldog’s clients received commemorative posters and limited edition T-shirts, packaged in labelled, PVC containers. A lavishly printed compendium using this imagery, will also be sent out in a few weeks.

Not all identity projects have a global impact; some are just plain fun. After 20 years in Malta, Cheri - an Irish hairdresser, retains strong feelings for her homeland. She asked Bulldog to create an identity that would suggest her place of birth as well as her trade. From a purely practical point of view, the identity needed to work across a whole host of ancillary applications such as towels, signage, salon interiors and stationery.

Our solution was to create an image immediately associated with hairdressing, that is also a visual shorthand for Cheri's nationality.

Foxglo (pronounced Fox-glow) was launched to address European consumer adoption of basic green ideas and a shift from use of incandescent light bulbs to energy efficient, compact florescent lighting.

Bulldog’s remit was to help the brand provide assurance of energy saving benefits, empower consumers to make technical comparisons with traditional incandescent bulbs and to promote correct waste handling for all Foxglo products.

Since many European countries have announced intentions to make Eco-friendly bulbs compulsory, campaigners have been calling for warnings and disposal advice to be printed on bulb packaging. Many of the leading European brands in the category have failed to do this, despite the risks posed by a product that requires special waste handling and increasing media pressure to do so.

Bulldog developed a name and visual identity that suggest the primary brand benefit with a view to penetrating the market quickly. The packaging solution, using bio-degradable inks and 100% recycled stock, attracts, directs and educates consumers – enabling informed purchasing decisions that will contribute to their well-being, as well as that of the environment.

I've always been facinated by logo design. When reviewing the portfolios of creative applicants hopeful of working with our company, I always seek out the logos section first.

I think this is because, in this discipline, it is difficult for creatives to mask a lack of ideas with ingenious formulas, slick printing processes and expensive paper stocks. Designing good logos is pretty difficult and in a world suffering from information overload, arresting viewers' attention momentarily and leaving them with a lasting impression requires designers to be: single minded, daring, distinctive and to master the enviable ability to make less say more.

If you’ve spent the day reviewing portfolios, it’s not impossible that you could be seduced by miracles of presentation and glossy style. Not so with logos – these only really work when execution and content are inseparably fused – making the execution part of the content. Take it from us, it’s rare but you’ll know when you see it.

We saw it when looking at Herb Lubalin’s Mother & Child logo for the first time, almost 20 years ago. It could be argued that all our creative endeavors to date, have been a reaction to the envy we felt at that time. It’s with baited breath that we grudgingly concede we may never reach the heights scaled by a giant like Mr Lubalin but by measuring ourselves against him, we’ve probably raised our level.

We hope you enjoy this selection of logos designed by Bulldog.

Skeletrain: is a railcar that careens through an indoor complex of demented hallways in total darkness, while eerie, projected images appear to fly at you. It utilises physical movement, video, sound and special effects to bring passengers a one of a kind, dark ride thrill, fused with a roller coaster.

Safeguard: is part of an initiative designed to raise awareness of Health and Safety issues at work. Relaxed enforcement of regulations in Malta leads to many work related injuries every year. Our client wished to take a proactive approach by encouraging his staff to show greater responsibility for their own safety at work. The design juxtaposes a stereotypical “worker” and a safety pin to create a visual pun for a “safe worker”.

Pipe Sarge: Pipesage is a product identity for a machine that performs cold and heat induction forming of precision pipe and tube bends. Sargeant stripes and pipe bending are optically intertwined to gain maximum effect with minimum means, while perfectly explaining the nature of the client’s business.

Cheri: is a mark for a patriotic hairdresser. Can you guess which country she’s from?

Raging Poet: is a club event that hosts live poetry, spoken word, and poetry in performance. Patrons can enjoy a drink in a relaxing atmosphere, while listening to live poetry recitals or they can perform on stage during open mike sessions. Using the nib of a pen as a starting point for our design, we altered it slightly to depict the performing poets.

Saint James: is Malta’s leading private hospital. The symbol customizes a red cross with hands to emphasize care. Designed over 15 years ago, it remains one of Malta’s most recognizable symbols.

Transactium: Our brief was to create an identity for Transactium – an organisation dedicated to facilitating safe, accurate and efficient payment processing. The solution had to be authorative and reassuring, while appealing to both financial and other industries. The identity is used to present 3 main areas of activity: gateway services, acquiring and merchant consultancy. Interlocking rings suggest attributes critical to all 3 areas: security, stability and global reach.

Sirius Systems: provides custom-made software solutions, training and consultancy. At first glance the symbol simply looks like 5 arrows pointing inwards but further examination reveals that the negative space created by the arrows makes up a star, hinting at the origin of the name (Sirius is a star).

Bulldog: designed in 1997, this whimsical symbol communicates attributes that are as relevant today as they were back then.

Traditionally, identities in this field tend to be very restrained and sometimes downright pretentious. Gestalt Psychotherapist – Linda Åklundh expressed a determination to avoid the clichéd approach adopted by many in her field.

Bulldog immediately realised that the solution to Linda’s problem would lie in our ability to reduce a seemingly complex message down to a memorable, engaging idea. Once we decided that what Linda does is: ’sort out puzzles in people’s heads’, this logo just sort of drew itself.

Linda says that she just can’t stop handing out her new business cards, “The change in peoples’ faces as they figure out the meaning for themselves is priceless.” We couldn’t agree more – in our opinion, the best communications leave room for audience participation.

Zuñiga is the dream of Eduardo Molina - a 43 year old ex-bank manager with a passion for wine making, that moved back to his native Venezuela from Sacremento, California. Upon inheriting a small winery on the highlands of Barquisimeto, he came to us to help him conceptualize the brand around his unique vision and to develop presentation materials that would excite, inspire and ultimately, move investors to become stakeholders in his venture. We delivered a solution that included a situation analysis and strategic brief for Zuñiga. This served as inspiration for the development of visual recognition elements, including packaging for the product portfolio.
