Bulldog’s blend of social science and business creativity was delivered at a symposium for members of the Education Department of the Stockholm City Council (Stockholm Stad). Our remit was to highlight the importance of understanding people in the context of culture, to initiate a dialogue about how to re-engineer practices to operate in a more competitive scenario and to catalyze innovative business creativity in the department.

The Swedish education system consists of day care centres, preschools, school childcare services, compulsory schools, upper secondary schools and adult education programmes. Instruction and teaching methods are regulated by the Government and Parliament at a national level, by municipalities and other authorities locally, and by the schools themselves at institutional level.

When the Education Department was founded, the idea that privately controlled institutions might offer contributions to the education system seemed contrary to the spirit of the era but in recent years this idea has gained wider currency. Today, they face competition from private alternatives in many of the areas they operate in.

Bulldog was hired to emphasize the importance of intelligent choice over efficient central control via this symposium with the department’s staff. You can hear a short audio clip from the event below.

Our work for Maltese electrical supplier Calleja was heralded as one of the world’s most effective rebrands in the seventh annual REBRAND 100® Global Awards. This prestigious accolade is the highest recognition for excellence in brand repositioning, and is the first and only global program of its kind. Bulldog’s rebrand of Calleja set out to provide reassurance of the brand’s enduring qualities after their Managing Director – Tony Calleja, passed away and to better position them for growth and profitability in the future.

We were completely shocked when we heard. In a field that includes some of the industry’s top firms, including Meta Design, Interbrand, FutureBrand, Siegel+Gale and Lippincott, we had to read the notification several times before we realize that we had won ‘Best of Awards’. Both Jonas and I were thrilled with the end product and so pleased the Rebrand 100 judges felt the same way.

Emphasis was on executed strategy that made an emotional connection, and met the stated objectives and needs of the identified customers and prospects. Jurors were unaware of the brand strategists’ name and size when reviewing the projects. Consequently, a small consulting firm had as much opportunity to be selected as did global organizations with exponentially greater budgets.

“There’s been some great work over the past months, and it wasn’t an easy task to shortlist the showcase projects,” said Sajag Patel, Managing Director and Principal Creative, Breathe Branding in United Arab Emirates and 2011 juror. To select winners, a new, international panel of multidisciplinary experts convenes yearly to review the best of the submissions. They consider “before” and “after” representations of brand transformations with written summaries.

Over 32 industries and 34 countries are represented among the 2011 winners. They ranged from the passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to luxury car brand, Audi, the United States Mint, BPost and of course, Calleja.

Some 2011 jurors included Marty Neumeier, Director of Transformation, Liquid Agency and author of Zag and The Designful Company; Fred Gelli, Creative Director and Partner, Tátil Design de Ideias in Brazil; Janelle James, Vice President, Account Director, Leo Burnett Worldwide; Chris Butler, Vice President, Newfangled; and Inese Silina of Nike Golf Global Brand Design.

After securing representation for some of the world’s leading model brands, Hobbyshop enjoyed years of unbroken sales and profit growth to become one of the foremost model shops in Norway. What’s more, they did it without any kind of third party, professional marketing help.

Unlike advertising, were the last message seen is often what is recalled, the meaning transmitted by a new brand’s first products, communications and actions will structure long-term perceptions. The importance of endowing a positive memory tag at first contact cannot be emphasised enough.

Business veterans, Chris and Aldo Calleja understood that creating an image to communicate with their customers by proxy no longer works in our web enabled, transparent society. Experience has taught them that consumers are more empowered than ever before to probe for their own truth about brands, rather than the one presented to them.

They hired Bulldog to help define relevant meaning for their startup ‘resource optimisation company‘, to minimise the possibility of contradiction between their image and culture.

This is important because people no longer consume products for purely functional satisfaction but also, to define and maintain their identity. Proof of this meaning-based consumption is all around us. Why else are consumers willing to pay more for skin care products that are not tested on animals, cars that are more environmentally sound and wines that attest to social standing?

However, it’s not just about how the outside world will see this new company. If there isn’t a clearly identified set of core values dictating behaviour, employees tend to feel aimless and lost.

With this in mind, we defined and recorded a Roadmap that will provide the following advantages as the brand develops:

Effective planning and management. The roadmap will allow Sparkbow to chart their progress towards clearly defined business objectives, rather than just concentrating on the task of the day.

Evaluation based on objectives. Review processes for products, communication and actions will all be grounded by the same objectives and criteria – rather than individuals’ subjective tastes and personal preferences.

Communications informed by better insight. All communications to be created by Sparkbow’s advertising/design/communications agencies will be able to leverage a compelling point of difference in the minds of their audience, their unique strengths and the vulnerability of their competitors.
